The University of Mary Washington, also reffered to as UMW, Mary Washington, or Mary Wash, is a public, coeducational liberal arts college located in Fredericksburg, which is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia, with over 19 000 people, living within its limits, as estimated during the 2000 census.
The university was established in 1908, when Virginia Governor Claude A. Swanson signed into law legislation for the establishment of the new State Normal and Industrial School for Women, which became Mary Washington College, in 1938, in March, 2004, the school adopting its current name.
UMW offers its students `a strong undergraduate education grounded in the liberal arts and sciences with more than 40 majors and programs of study`, including Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Liberal Studies, and Master of Science in Elementary Education, as well as study abroad programs, double-majors and interdisciplinary majors.
UMW's athletic teams are called the Eagles and they compete in NCAA Division III. Their distinctive colors are navy blue and gray.
